ok i need to talk about this in more than just tags. first of all this is beautiful. jake has such great character development. but we need to talk more about his relationship with amy and how he reacts to it. when amy says things, jake takes them to heart. she’s not doing it in a controlling way or “trying to change him” the way that trope is normally portrayed either. jake wants to grow up and be better. it’s not “ugh i have to drink 8 glasses of water a day now bc of my nagging girlfriend” or “i’m pretending to do this thing to get her off my back” he’s really trying. it’s an attitude of “my girlfriend is trying to take care of me and i want to grow and be better so i’m letting her”. and with the books, she doesn’t say “you’re an idiot you should read more” she makes a passing comment about it or mentions a book she loves and jake wants to love it too. they spend time together and feed off of each other in a natural way. (of course amy starts doing the cool cool cool cool thing… he says it a lot. it’s a contagious speech thing.) they really just know each other and it’s so wholesome and not the typical sitcom “ball and chain” type of thing.
sorry for the rant.
jake peralta appreciation post
- was open and honest about his feelings towards Amy from almost the very start
- didn’t try to sabotage her existing relationship
- didn’t lie to her about his feelings except once but then he felt bad and told her the truth the same day
- tried to move on in a healthy manner, accepting that she was taken
- dated someone else and didn’t immediately dump her and try and get with Amy once Amy became available (seriously it bugs me so much when characters do this. If you’re just using a relationship as a stopgap until your preferred partner becomes available, DON’T BE IN THAT RELATIONSHIP!!)
- didn’t tell Dave not to ask her out even though he liked her because he knew it wasn’t fair to her - “I can’t go around telling guys not to ask Amy out because I like her and I’m too dumb to do anything about it"
- never once tried to control her or emotionally manipulate her to be with him and was open and upfront about his feelings
- when they actually became a couple, is completely committed & in love with her and is willing to make sacrifices for their relationship like moving into her apartment because he realises it’s important to her and would make her happy
- in the episode where she’s undercover in the prison and he keeps interfering bc he’s worried about her getting hurt he doesn’t try to make her leave bc he can’t handle it and instead accepts that he’s the one that needs to take himself off the case bc he knows she can handle it by herself and him being there is only hindering her progress because he can’t stop worrying
- isn’t afraid of her becoming more successful than him - is really supportive of her taking the sergeant’s exam which could result in her outranking him and even becoming his boss bc “You can’t be afraid to be successful, you’re too good for that” and “I’ve always known you were gonna be my boss”
- READ HARRY POTTER JUST BECAUSE HE KNEW SHE LOVED THEM SO WANTED TO ENJOY THEM WITH HER
- tl;dr jake peralta is one of the best male tv protagonists & boyfriends of all time and peraltiago is literally the healthiest and best relationship ever and has given me unrealistic romance expectations for life
there are so many things I adore abt parks and rec but I have got to say, its uncanny ability to take a tried and true character trope, pull out the positive elements and subvert the negative stuff is,,, incredible???
like. lazy deadbeat boyfriend becomes amazing husband and father, still retains his childlike innocence and fun-loving attitude.
super type-a career driven woman is incredibly considerate and kind, learns to slow down and think of others’ ability to keep up and eventually gets married and has three kids, but never once at the cost of her ambitions.
typical angsty youth finds purpose and passion in people she cares about, doesn’t give up her dark sense of humour and is still allowed to dislike interacting with lots of people at once.
uptight male nerd has career goals, a well-rounded social life and is incredibly respectful and supportive of his wife because he is a responsible adult; still writes star trek fanfic in his free time.
capitalist libertarian who insists that everyone is responsible for their own success spends countless hours supporting and encouraging his friends’ dreams, even if they’re in government, without changing his apolitical stance.
and that’s not even the whole cast!!!
everyone remains who they are, maintains the positive elements of many of these old character tropes in a way that only amplifies the humor, but they discard all the bad bits, the negative bits, the toxic bits, instead having complex flaws and real human shortcomings while still all being fundamentally Good People
Like. What A Show.
lowkey can’t wait for there to be an especially dramatic episode of brooklyn nine nine where andy sambergs character gets shot and everyone dubs mmm whatcha say over the scene and we come full circle
